Poros Island - The Alternative to Athens

Poros island lays right in the middle of the Saronic Gulf, 32 miles from Athens.

The Island of Poros revolves in cubistic planes, one of walls and windows, one of rocks and goats, one of stiff blown trees and shrubs and so on. Yonder, where the mainland curves like a whip, lie the wild lemon groves and there in the spring young and old go mad from the fragrance of sap and blossom.

Visitors to Poros, immediately become witnesses to a strip of crystal clear waters, fringed by scenery that is blessed by mother-nature.

Poros Island looks like a simple prolongation of Peloponesse, since the isthmus that separates it from the Mainland of Peloponesse is narrow. You get a feeling that Poros is a small Vosporus. You enter the harbor of Poros swaying and swirling, a gentle idiot tossed about amidst masts and nets in a world which only the painter knows.

To sail slowly through the streets of Poros is to recapture the joy of passing through the neck of the womb. It is a joy too deep almost to be remembered.

While staying on Poros Island you can easily visit the Peloponnese mainland, ready to explore Nafplion, one of the most beautiful towns inGreece, the ancient Mycenae, as well as the Epidavros village and the most famous theatre all over the world, the Ancient theatre of Epidavros. From Poros you can also visit Aegina Island, Hydra Island and less than an hour on the Hydrofoil for a daily tour to Spetses.

POROS ISLAND, apart from its own beauty, gives good reasons to anyone who might want to visit Athens, Peloponnese and the Aegean Islands, and at the same time avoid staying in Athens. If you plan to visit Greece, to see the islands and the major archeological sites, Poros is the greatest Athens alternative.

Hydra Island - The cosmopolitan island

Hydra, the small island of Saronic Gulf possesses a particularly honorary place between the tourist islands of Country, if in deed someone thinks how small it is. Hardly 55 square klm extent and from population… thousands each summertime (permanent roughly 2.000).

The capital Hydra fascinates with the graphic architecture and its countless historical mansions.
Green and full of flowers always with the air of the island, demonstrates with pride stoned "villas” of the past, churches, monasteries, fantastic view and unique beaches.
And all these, in… very "compact" dimensions and with big movement.
Beautiful is considered by all, the full of life, harbor.

The capital of Hydra, is a town that startle with its plenitude in all sectors.
The nightly amusement and the movement during summertime (where also the island is transformed…) is amazing , the market is full of tourists, the choices for food , coffee, drink unlimited and qualitative, while the hotel units abundant as the beaches.

Particularity (for most pleasant), constitutes the entire lack of all kind of vehicles
in the island, that is substituted by tens of caiques , donkeys and horse carriages.

There are many beautiful beaches on the island of Hydra that worth a visit.
Two of the most known though are Mandraki, which is 2 km east from Hydra town, and it is the old shipbuilding docks of the Hydriots, is the island's only real sandy beach. Vlihos is a pretty small hamlet with a rocky beach, a picturesque 19th century bridge, tavernas and a few rooms.

Aegina Island - A Favourite Summer Resort

Aegina island located in Saronic Gulf, only 17,5 nautical miles from Piraeus (Athens Port) and is the ideal place for weekend or a daily cruise but and a favourite summer resort.

Aegina Island, is a rugged island with lots of sandy coves perfect for swimming, while shelter is provided by oaks, cypresses and wild olive trees rather than the usual pines.

The capital of Aegina, is Aegina town. It is worth a visit - its splendid neo-classical buildings around the waterfront are reminders of the town's former status.

The sunsets are spectacular in Aegina island and you can watch the local fisherman tinker with their boats and mend their nets at any time of day. Beyond the row of shops and tavernas you will see the marina, where the caiques (wooden sailing boats) double as market stalls, crammed with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Apart from antiquities, Aegina island has much to offer in the way of sandy beaches for sun worshippers and swimming enthusiasts, along with delightful fishing villages, and a richly varied landscape.

South of Aegina town, is the seaside village of Marathon, followed by the fishing port of Perdika (9 km.). From Perdika small boats ferry visitors to the picturesque islets of Angistri and Moni, ideal spots for enjoying nature, solitude and relaxing pursuits.

The Island's most important archeological site is located on the east of the island near Agia Marina where the temple of Aphaia, a very ancient goddess once patroness of Egina, is situated. The first temple was erected in 570 B.C and destroyed some sixty years later. The Temple of Afea, is even older than the Parthenon in Acropolis of Athens, but is remarkably well preserved. Around the Temple are the remains of the priests' quarters and precinct walls.

Aegina island, is ideal base for your holiday, as it is very close to Athens (only 1/2 hour on the hydrofoil).
